Philosophy of the programme

The program is anchored on the philosophy of unlocking educational and training challenges through innovations and research responsive to societal needs and transformative development in pursuant to competency based training. This is in line of producing quality teachers, trainers and leaders in training, research and innovations in the field of education and management. The program is intended to provide students with professional, technical and information & technology skills required by the society in the competency based training by teaching fraternity and at the same time meet the quality requirements of the University.

Admission requirements for the proposed programme 

Admission Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree with two teaching subjects with at least 12 units in each subject reflecting secondary school curriculum content.
Duration: 2 semesters
Mode of Study: Fulltime/Part-time/Weekend
Campus: Main Campus (Nchiru)
Tuition fees per semester: Ksh. 60,000

 Goal of the Programme

The goal of the programme is twofold. Firstly, to prepare and train post graduate teachers for an active career in competency based professional education, information technology and to develop their intellectual, professional and social characters to enable them become innovative and responsible leaders within the school and the global community. Secondly, to provide a basis for post graduate diploma in education training as an enabler to pursue advanced training in professional fields of education.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme

By the end of this programme, post graduate teacher should be able to:

  1. Use acquired professional skills and knowledge in solving education related problems innovatively in the society.
  2. Apply appropriate pedagogical skills in teaching successfully at the secondary school, colleges and tertiary levels.
  3. Identify researchable problems in society and carry out research for decision making.
  4. Utilize modern information technologies, innovations and competencies in the practice of teaching and learning.
  5. Participate and contribute in the formulation of public education policies in the society.

Mode of Delivery of the program

The Mode of Delivery is through face to face on full time basis/blended learning.

Regulations on credit transfer in the programme

There is no credit transfer allowable in the Post Graduate Diploma programme

Management and Administration of the Programme

The programme is housed in the Department of Education Science at the School of Education. It will be headed by a senior lecturer in the department in consultation with the Chairman of Department will manage its implementation in line with the quality management systems already in place in the University. The department will constantly consult with Quality Assurance department to enforce standards and regulation during implementation. The lecture halls and equipment for delivery are adequate and will be shared with other programmes in the University. The prescribed core references, journals and other reference materials are available in the University library and e-library.

Career prospects

A teacher trainee is eligible to teach in a secondary school and certificate or diploma offering college with teachers’ service commission an in Kenya and beyond.  Besides, one could get engaged by the public service commission, county government and the armed forces as a trainer. The non-governmental organizations too can employ you. Above all one can establish a teaching/training institution to offer basic of tertiary education.

Expected Career Directions

a) Principal or Administrator

As a principal you are the leader of your school, heavily influencing and shaping the culture and learning systems in place, serving as an aid or advisor to teachers, and ensuring that every student is getting the most out of their education while receiving the instruction and support they need to succeed.

b) School or Career Counselor

School counselors are an important presence at most elementary, middle and high schools. They help students who are struggling socially or who are having psychological issues or problems at home. They also assist students with academics, often acting as the main facilitator and mentor during the college application process. In almost all schools, a master’s degree is required to work as a school guidance counselor.

c) Corporate Trainer

Working as a corporate trainer is a great career option for M.Ed. holders who love to teach but would prefer to work in a more corporate environment with adults.

d) Educational Consultant

Working as an educational consultant offers teachers another alternative to working in the classroom every day. This can be a great second career after teaching or an option for educators looking to take a few years off from day-to-day teaching. To work as a consultant, most employers require a master’s degree along with actual teaching experience.
